German plans for “IT-Security Kits”

In a recently published document the German government details plans for so-called IT-Security Kits (IT-Sicherheitskits). Despite the name, main focus of this kit is to provide a unique electronic identifier token to every German citizen that renews her (mandatory) national ID card.

It will include a chipcard, a chipcard reader, software for the chipcard, the ID card (which will include a RFID chip as well) and the new digital card for health insurance. It will also include a bundled anti-virus application. So far I have not read anything in terms of targeting other OSes besides Microsoft Windows.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want the government running software on my machine. I don’t want a digital ID that can be used to track me and can be made mandatory for using the net, step by step. I don’t want an authentification scheme used for essential commodities that will be broken and misappropriated as fast as possible. I don’t want to have money poured into mediocre software merchants and chip card makers.
